Q2. The Summer
League Championship is played for the new Woodhouse
Cup. But the Yorkshire inter-cities Saturday League plays for the
Woodhouse Cup. What is the explanation?
A2. The Woodhouse Cup
was originally presented such that if a team won it three years in a row,
they were deemed to have won it outright. Leeds did just that,
winning it outright in 1920 (or thereabouts). A new Woodhouse
Cup was presented and that was won outright by Sheffield in 1929 (or
thereabouts). At that point Leeds represented the old Woodhouse
Cup and the rules were changed so that it could no longer be won
outright. Thus the old Woodhouse Cup is still being
competed for in the Saturday Yorkshire League. The new Woodhouse
Cup was at one time used as the trophy for the Annual Match against
Sheffield Works Association, Chess Section. In recent times it has
become the trophy for the Summer League.
