The Sheffield Individual Tournaments

Individual Tournament Controller Geoff Brown is trying to round up more entries for the 2022-23 event and has sent to various people an e-mail the text of which is as follows:

Hi everyone

I'm writing to you either because you've played in the Sheffield Individuals in the fairly recent past, or because you're a current club secretary or team captain (and I've copied in Steve Mann).  The closing deadline for this season's tournaments is approaching (see attached flyer) [below] I'm trying to boost the number of entries we have so far.  I wonder if you would consider entering yourself and / or pass the information around to your club/team members.

It is a Swiss style tournament having six rounds and split into three sections according to playing strength, with a round about every four to six weeks or so.  Once the draw for the round is made, you make arrangements with your opponent to play the match before the closing date for that round.  Normally black has choice of venue except when the opponent is a junior.

Unfortunately, the 2019/20 tournaments were curtailed due to the pandemic, and I'm aware that some people are still unsure about getting back into playing over the board chess, particularly in enclosed rooms.  Traditionally, these games have often been played in players' homes but, whilst some can be played at club venues, there's no reason why they can't be played in any, mutually convenient, space.  I remember playing a round in John Fletcher's lovely back garden a few years back.  Many pubs and cafés now have heated outdoor areas.  I'm sure such venues wouldn't mind you playing there as long as you were buying drinks.

Did I mention that entry is free?  It is.  So, there's really no reason for you not to enter.

Best wishes

and the flyer reads:

The Sheffield Individual Tournaments

Comprising the Bruce Trophy, Holroyd Trophy &

Shapero Trophy

These will be played as six-round Swiss tournaments spread out over the coming
season, with one game scheduled every four to six weeks.  In the case of insufficient
entries then sections may be combined or a different format may be used

Closing date for entries extended to Saturday 15th October 2022
