The Sheffield & District Chess Association promotes chess in an undefined area, but has traditionally included member clubs from Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley, north Derbyshire, north Nottinghamshire, as well as, sometimes, Doncaster.

Besides running inter-team competitions among the member clubs, it also runs individual competitions among individual member.

It also fields representative teams in external competitions, mainly those of the Yorkshire Chess Association, to which it has traditionally been affiliated.
