Sheffield Wins Woodhouse Cup

Saturday 22nd of April saw the final round of the Yorkshire League.

The Woodhouse Cup (Div. 1) was won by Sheffield A.  Technically, had Sheffield lost all games in their final-round match versus Calderdale, and York A had managed at least 7˝ game points from their match versus Hull & DCA A, then York would have secured first place on a game-point tie-break.  Hull had a famous unbroken run of 14 wins from 1987 to 2000.  After that, York came to the fore, but have so far not managed a run of more than 4 successive wins.  Woodhouse Cup winners since 2000 have been as follows:

The I M Brown Shield (Div. 2) was won by Huddersfield.  Again, a miracle last-round loss by Huddersfield would have let Ilkley Dragons win, but that too was never going to happen.  Sheffield B finished third.

The Silver Rook (Div. 3) was won by York D.  That was already “in the bag”, and York D could afford to lose their last match.  It is good to see Dewsbury, who were returning to the league later than other clubs, doing well (2nd), and it was also good to see new-comers Settle doing well (3rd).  Sheffield was not represented in this division.

The Under-18 Teams’ Championship was evidently (this may be wrong) deemed to have been won by Hull & East Riding A with York Assassins second.  (It may be that the York-Hull tie on match points as represented on LMS and this website was resolved by their individual match result rather than game points.)  Sheffield Area Schools’ CA finished 8th out of 14 teams.
