Mini Standardplay Chess Tournament

U-1650 rating (U-130 grade) or new/junior unrated,

2nd (round 1) & 3rd (rounds 2 to 5) July 2021,

Spa View Community Church, Spa View Road, Birley Spa, Sheffield, S12 4HD,

all moves in a game in 45 minutes, with a 15-second increment from move 1.

Jonathan Arnott advises that he is organising an over-the-board tournament, as above, limited to players with a connection to S&DCA member clubs (e.g. membership of a club, playing for a team in the league).  It aims to give beginners and juniors the chance to play some proper over-the-board chess before in-person leagues resume, and (assuming there are enough players entering who already have grades) it should help to get some grading data in the system for those who don't already have any.  There is also the aim to provide an introduction to over-the-board chess to new players who have taken up the game initially on line.

Full details are given on the on-line entry form to which the link is given below.  (You can take a peek without actually entering!)

The event seems well thought out, as evidenced, for instance, by the optional introduction to OTB tournament chess for newcomers, and the relatively fast time control aimed at juniors an impetuous on-line players.  Jonathan asks that the following from him is circulated.

Because we're not 100% sure what the social distancing requirements will be in July, and because we have a number of new members in the Association who don't yet have an ECF grade, we're limiting it to U130 grade (U1675 rating).

(In the event of relaxation of rules, we would consider adding a separate Open section.)

We have a strong idea of how COVID risk minimisation will work, having considered the ECF guidelines, but more details will be available nearer the time when we have clarity on what will and will not be permitted.

Maximum capacity to minimise Covid risk (expected): 40 players

Venue: Spa View Community Church, Spa View Road, Birley Spa, Sheffield, S12 4HD.

Parking available at/outside the venue. There is a public playing field next door.

Time control: All moves in 45 minutes, with a 15-second increment from move 1.

Minimum guaranteed prize fund (provided that we have 30+ players) as follows:

First -

£125

Second -

£60

Third -

£30

Entry fee: £20 (adult), £15 (junior)

Prizes for best Junior, best newcomer, grading prize are dependent on entry and may be cash, book prizes or both. The Time Traveller's Emporium Trophy will also be awarded for one year to the top local junior player in the event.

We're also trying to limit the competition to players with a connection to S&DCA member clubs (e.g. membership of a club, playing for a team in the league). I've checked with the ECF and Bronze membership will be sufficient provided that we stick to that stipulation. If anyone is not yet a member of the ECF and wants to play, note that the ECF membership year runs to the end of August. If you join on July 1st, the membership rolls over and you get 14 months' membership. If you join now, you only get 3‑4 months' membership. Feel free to book your place in the competition now, and join the ECF at the start of July, but you'll need to inform me that you've done so.
