Rotherham Online Summer Cup

Huddersfield's Greg Eagleton clinched victory on tie-break in the latest Rotherham Online Open tournament which attracted 29 entries from all parts of the county and beyond.

Eagleton finished unbeaten on 5/6 after a tense win over highly rated Sheffield player Deji Jeje in the last round.

Doncaster's Sean McDonald finished in second place, also on 5/6, after drawing with Eagleton in round three in a hard-fought encounter which ended in a three-fold repetition.

Long-time leader Tom Wills, from the SASCA Sheffield club, started in fine style but drew with Eagleton in round five before losing to McDonald in the last round to finish third on tie-break, ahead of Moortown's Richard Allis, both on four and a half.

The Summer Cup competition attracted entries from Ilkley, Bradford, Leeds, Sunderland, Barnsley, Hull and Harrogate...and one from India!

It was played over a six weeks’ period at the rate of 30 minutes, plus a 20 seconds per move increment.

Competition organiser Oliver Brennan is planning a 'decent-sized break' before the next tournament, which is likely to be an open to all Rapidplay starting next month.
