Following on from the earlier mini standard-rate over-the-board congress on 2nd & 3rd July, which was for players rated under 1675, Jonathan Arnott organised a second such event, this time with two sections. The first section, “Invitational”, was open to players rated 1675 or over, along with invited well‑performing players currently rated below 1675, though most potential invitées appear to have reached 1675 or more in the August rating list!. The second section, “Improvers”, was open to those with a rating below 1675, which equates to an old 130 grade.

The venue was again the Spa View Community Church, Spa View Road, Birley Spa, Sheffield, S12 4HD. Phill Beckett was once again (chief) arbiter – I say “chief”, as Jonathan recently qualified as an ECF arbiter.

Miles Edwards-Wright, of the Sheffield junior club SASCA (himself no longer a “junior” as such, of course), won the Invitational on 4½ out of 5. Highest-rated participant, Deji Jeje (even older!), never recovered from the tactically ill-advised half-point bye in round one, only drawing with Miles in round 4, then losing to second-placed Sammy Benzaira in round 5.

Alannah Ashton, of Oldham junior club 3Cs, British Girls’ Under-8 Champion of 2019, won the Improvers on 4½, followed by 5 players on 3.
