University of Sheffield Chess Society: Current vs 1970s Alumni

An on-line match was played on 04/08/2021 between Sheffield University players of the present (“Current”) and past ones from the 1970s (“Alumni”).  Older S&DCA members will remember most of the Alumni.  Of the Alumni, only Phill Beckett is still active in chess in the S&DCA.  Others are still active chess-players elsewhere, though two seem now inactive in “serious” chess.  The result was as follows:

After 5 games had finished, the score stood at 2˝-2˝, but a win from Chris McSheehy converted that to a win for the Alumni.

A further game between Oliver West (Current) and Richard S Hughes (Alumni) is scheduled for the 10th August.  That resulted in a win for the Alumnus, Richard Hughes, giving a final score-line of Current 2˝-4˝ Alumni.

PS (24/03/2022)  Jon Nelson happened upon an article, dated 15/12/2022, posted by Richard Hughes on the SU Alumni website at https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/alumni/news/life-boards-chess-sheffield-1970s.  This includes recent photographs of Richard (facial features perhaps vaguely familiar 36 years on) and John Walmsley.
