| THE YORKSHIRE CHESS ASSOCIATION   (President – The LORD
    MAYOR OF
    YORK)   Will hold its
    Annual Meeting in the De Grey Rooms, York, during the week commencing
    Monday, August 2nd, 1869.   Prizes will
    be offered for competition as follows:-   CLASS I. – Open to all Provincial
    Amateurs, on becoming members of the Association by a subscription of at
    least 10s. 6d.  The first prize will be of the value of £10.   CLASS II. – Open to members who, in
    the opinion of the Executive Committee, are not strong enough for class
    I.  The first prize will be of the value of £5.   CLASS
    III. – Open to members who have never made a study of the game, or
    who have not frequently played with strong players.   Ladies who
    are members compete in the above classes.   Prizes in
    Class III, and second and third Prizes in Classes I and II, will be awarded
    at the discretion of the Executive Committee, depending on the funds at
    their disposal.   Amateurs may
    become members of the Association by subscription of at least 10s. 6d. per
    annum.   THE PRIZES
    WILL NOT BE GIVEN IN MONEY,
    but in Books, Plate, &c., as the successful competitors may choose,
    subject to the approval of the Executive Committee.   The Executive
    Committee reserve to themselves the right of inviting any Metropolitan
    Amateurs to become members of the Association, and take part in the play.   There are six
    competitors for the Society’s Problem Prize.  The award will be
    made at this meeting.   Tickets of
    admission for the week, to visitors (ladies and gentlemen), 2s. 6d. each.   In addition
    to the prizes already mentioned, the Association offers in –   CLASS I. – A CHALLENGE CUP* OR PRIZE,
    probable value £50, guaranteed value £40, to become the
    property of the person who first twice wins the Society’s
    £10 Prize – Mr. Thorald [sic, means Thorold] has won it once. 
    Competitors must pay £1 1s., in addition to their subscription as
    members.   CLASS II.
    - A CHALLENGE CUP* OR
    PRIZE, probable value £20, to
    become the property of the person who first twice wins the
    Society’s £5 Prize – Mr. Fisher has won it once.  Competitors
    must pay 10s. 6d., in addition to their subscription as members.   JOHN NEWTON,
