15/06/2022 Congress to Host the Yorkshire Individual Championship
One of the recurrent items on the YCA AGM agenda, raising its head again in 2022, is selection of a congress to host the Yorkshire Individual Championship. A projected rota of congresses’ “turns” is maintained, though it is ever evolving to account for congresses falling by the wayside and new ones coming along. It was decided some years ago that the rota would be based on calendar years rather than chess seasons.
Bradford was down to host the championship in 2021, but covid prevented Bradford 2021 proceeding, so Scarborough 2021 hosted it instead (though they may not have known it at the time!). That “normally” would push the rota onwards a year, meaning Bradford would be offered the option for 2022. However, the Bradford & DCA website says, “The Bradford District Chess Association will not be running a chess congress in 2022. However, we are delighted to be supporting the Ilkley Chess Festival running between 16th & 18th September.”
In the past, it has happened that new congresses have been slotted in at the head of the list, pushing the others along a year, so it seems Ilkley would be an appropriate congress to host the 2022 Yorkshire Championship, if they wished.
A revision of the rota of projected “turns” is needed. Scarborough, having hosted 2021 out of turn, should perhaps go to the end. On the assumption Bradford is likely to return, then they will need slotting back in, perhaps immediately after Ilkley or in Scarborough’s original slot. The following is the pre-covid rota and a suggested revised rota, which would of course continually evolve, for instance due to Leeds Congress not re-emerging, as seems likely.
Sheffield and York Congresses no longer appear as both ceased running some time ago.
For information, recent hosts (and winners) have been
