Played in the staff canteen of Sheffield Twist Drill and Steel Co., in May 1971, over 56 boards. Final score: Works 32½-23½ Association
Introduction
The 1971 Annual Match was held in the staff canteen of Sheffield Twist Drill & Steel Company (aka Dormer Drills, later SKF & Dormer), and a professional photographer was hired, seemingly by the host company. The date isn’t known, but it would have been in early May.
Copies of some of these photographs have kindly been lent by John H. T. Eddershaw, so that they could be reproduced on this website. (Click here for the first photo.) Some details of the reporting of the match in the Works Chess Section bulletin have kindly been supplied by Chris Williams. The report started as follows:
The S&DCA Bulletin dated 14th May 1971 gave the match result as Works Sports Ass. 32½, S & D C Ass. 23½, but no details of players.
A number of chess-players in the photographs are recognisable to the present writer, and others are identifiable with the aid of the results. These are detailed on the photograph pages.
