|
Played Monday 20/11/1893, at the YMCA, Fargate, over 13 boards
This match had the distinction of being the first match played in the Sheffield & District Chess Association’s inter-club team “league” competition. Though the S&DCA was formed a little more than 10 years previously, at a meeting held on 03/03/1883, the idea of a “league” competition was not implemented until the S&DCA AGM of 1893. Hitherto clubs had arranged matches on an informal basis.
* H. Sparkes is believed to be William Henry John Sparkes, who was probably known as Henry due to is father being called William, and was later usually referred to as W H Sparkes.
