Played in the Clarence Hotel, High Street, on Tuesday, 18/12/1887, over 15 boards, 2 games per board, time permitting.
As the number of chess clubs in Sheffield grew, some Athenaeum Chess Club members were also members of other chess clubs, and so were eligible to play on either side. In this match G. H Harrison, who had previously play on the Athenaeum side of matches such of these, played for the Association, very nearly being paired against his brother, S. G. Harrison.
Play took place from 7.30 to 10.30, at which point a number of unfinished games were adjudicated.
Robert Snow, Association secretary, was evidently supervising the proceedings, and announced the result at the end. Alderman Foster spoke on behalf of the visitors.
