1850: “Norfolk Street Athenaeum” visited by “Surrey Street Athenaeum” |
|
The Sheffield Athenaeum & Mechanics Institute Chess Club, Surrey Street, paid a “return” visit to members of the Sheffield Athenaeum Chess Club, Norfolk Street, at the latter club’s premises in Norfolk Street, on the evening of Thursday 07/12/1850. The visit does not seem to have taken the form of a conventional “match”.
The Sheffield & Rotherham Independent of 12/01/1850 reported on the visit in general terms, but offered no results of specific games, and named none of those present.
