Some
sad news is that James Marley's father recently passed away.
Chris
joined Ecclesall Chess Club back in 1982, when it changed its name
from being Ecclesall Non-Political Chess Club. He was a strong player at that time, and he
won our club championship on seven different occasions, between 1988 and
2005. He no doubt would have won it more times, if it wasn't for Dr P
W Hempson always entering and often winning the competition. Chris also captained our A team for two
spells, each of three or four years, then he handed over the captaincy to
his son James in 2012. It was
around that time when Chris began to show signs of memory loss.
Consequently, he played less and less chess and in 2016 he played his last
game for our club, finishing with a win. Unfortunately, he couldn't beat Alzheimer’s
and recently passed away.
His
funeral takes place on Wednesday 16th August, starting 12:30 pm at the
Chapel, Abbey Lane Cemetery, S8 0BQ. It is
followed by a wake at The Waggon & Horses on Abbeydale Rd, from 1:30
pm. Anyone who knew Chris is
welcome to attend.
