by Peter Catt

Autumn Rapidplay

Sheffield University's James Luong, on 4½ points out of 5, won the Autumn Rapid competition on tie-break in the most closely contested tournament organised by the award-winning Rotherham Online website since its inception more than eighteen months ago.

No fewer than six players finished equal on four and a half points at the top of the leader-board at the end of the six-round event, but Luong edged into first place by half a tie-break point ahead of runner up Deji Jeje, 4½, from the Sheffield-based SASCA club, despite losing their individual encounter in the third round.

Jeje and third-placed Martin Sheard 4½ (Barnsley) both remained unbeaten throughout the tournament.

Also on 4½ were Geoff Frost and Chris Shephard (both Sheffield Nomads) and Rotherham's Nathaniel Holroyd-Doveton.

Twenty-nine players took part in the tournament which had a time limit of 15 minutes per game, plus a 10-seconds-per-move increment.
