Charles Burdett Ogden |

Charles Burdett Ogden was a Leeds-resident chess-player who played in the first Oxford-Cambridge chess match. He is not the C. Ogden who attended WYCA meetings as a member of one or other Bradford club.
Non-Chess Life
Charles Burdett Ogden was born at Great Wigston in Leicestershire on 13th July 1849, son of Joseph Armitage Ogden (born 1819, Halifax).
By 1861 the family had moved to the parish of St John the Evangelist in West Leeds. In 1868 their address was more specifically identified as 1 Claremont Place, Leeds.
He went to Leeds Grammar School, was admitted as a “pensioner” to Magdalene College Cambridge, matriculating on 1st July 1868, getting his BA in 1872 and his MA in 1876.
In 1873 he took up a teaching post at Rossall School, Rossall being near Fleetwood in Lancashire. He stayed at Rossall School until 1909, when he presumably retired. At some stage he moved to Birmingham, ending up at The Yews, Kings Norton, Birmingham.
Charles Burdett Ogden’s brother, Thomas Jones Ogden (b. 1854/55), also went to Leeds Grammar School, was admitted as pensioner to Magdalene College Cambridge on 12th August 1875, by which time the Odgens had moved to 6 Queen Square, Leeds. Thomas Jones Ogden matriculated in Michaelmas 1875, got his BA in 1879, and much later his MA in 1899. He too became a school master, first at Malvern Links School, then for a while at the same school as his brother ,at Rossall, and later at Buxton.
Death
His obituary in the Times of 17th December 1923 says he died suddenly on 10th December 1923, while playing chess.
Chess
While at Cambridge, he played in the first Oxford-Cambridge annual chess match, and may possibly have been known, as a fellow Leeds chess-player, to the president of the Oxford University Chess Club, Samuel Redhead Meredith.
He left Yorkshire after leaving Cambridge, so he doesn’t appear much in Yorkshire chess records. “C. B. Ogden, Leeds” nevertheless appeared on board 51 in the Yorkshire team which played Lancashire in 1884. This was as well as C. Ogden of Bradford who was on a higher board.
He obviously continued his interest in chess, as he was playing chess when he died.
