Non-Chess Life
Fred Hulley’s parents were Herbert Hulley and Annie Hulley who had at least the children:
Frederick was born on 15/04/1906, in Rotherham, and was baptised on 16/05/1906 at All Saints Rotherham by the curate, I. Davies. At this point the family was resident at 47 Sheffield Road, Rotherham, and father Herbert was a steel smelter.
Frederick is recorded as attend the local National School, in Alma Street, from 12/09/1910 to 29/11/1912.
The 1911 census found the family living at 23 Coke Lane, off Westgate, Rotherham. Father Herbert was an asphalter in a steel works. Elsie and Frederick were scholars.
Frederick became an elementary-school teacher.
Frederick married Vera Esmeralda Ambler (born 14/03/1908, Newbury district of Berkshire) in 1931, in Rotherham. In 1936, twins were born, it seems:
Margot died at of shortly after birth.
The 1939 census found the family living at 22 Brecks Crescent, Rotherham. This was the same address as was given for Frederick, as secretary of Rotherham Chess Club, in 1949, but a couple of minutes’ walk from where (Wilfred) Colin Evans had come to live in Brecks Lane after the end of the war.
In 1958, daughter Ann seems to have married Alan G Newton, somewhere in the Rother Valley.
Chess
Fred Hulley played for Rotherham Chess Club in the Sheffield league, and possibly for Sheffield in the I. M. Brown.
He played for Yorkshire at correspondence chess, at least in 1934-35.
He played on board 30 for Yorkshire in the 21/03/1936 Yorkshire v Lancashire match.
He was secretary of Rotherham Chess Club, at least in 1948-49.
Death
Frederick Hulley died in 1994, in Rotherham.
Vera Esmiralda Hulley died in 2003, in Rotherham.
