Non-Chess Life
Frederick Edward Foster was born on 30/06/1856, in Sheffield.
He was the first son of Edward Savile Foster (also a Sheffield chess player and official), and in 1881 was unmarried and living with his father and siblings, his mother having by then died, and working as a chartered accountant.
Later he worked variously both as an accountant and as a sharebroker.
At the time of his death he was living at West Lea, 98 Ashdell Road, Sheffield.
Chess
He was secretary of the Sheffield Athenaeum Chess Club in 1883, he was vice-president of the Sheffield and District Chess Association in 1890 (and doubtless held such posts in other years for which information is not to hand).
He attended the annual meeting of the West Yorkshire Chess Association in 1886, at Huddersfield, where he lost in the first round of the Class A with black to T.E. Stokoe of Leeds. He was similarly down in the list for the Class A in 1889 at Leeds, but is recorded as defaulting with black in the first round to one Meredith of Leeds, so presumably he didn’t actual attend.
In 1888 he won outright the Sheffield Athenaeum Chess Club’s Championship Trophy, by virtue of winning it twice.
Around 1890 he was playing high up in the Sheffield Woodhouse Cup team, typically board two, below the Rev. E.J. Huntsman.
Death
He died at his home, West Lea, 98 Ashdell Road, Sheffield, on 21/01/1910, as a result of pneumonia, and was buried at Burngreave Cemetery, on 24/01/1910. (Click here for images of the grave.)
