On Saturday 10/12/1938, World Champion Alexander Alexandrovich Alekhine gave a simultaneous display at Leeds Chess Club, over 36 boards, winning 28 games, drawing 6 and losing 2.  The display had been arranged by the Yorkshire Chess Association, and opponents had been drawn from a number of areas of the county, so that the event was not of a purely local nature as so many such displays were.

Play took place in the crypt of the Albert Hall, Leeds, with the Alekhine’s 36 opponents arranged in a circle, and Alekhine himself walking round in the centre.  There were about 150 spectators.

After an introduction by C. W. Roberts of Brighouse, YCA president.  In reply, Alekhine mentioned that this was his last such display before leaving [on 17/12/1938] for South America.

Play lasted five hours.  The last game to finish was that of L. C. A. Lewis.  Once he was down to one remaining opponent, Alekhine asked for a chair, and played out the remaining game seated, watched intently by 40 to 50 spectators, some standing on benches and chairs to get a view.

Alekhine’s opponents, and their results, as listed in the Sheffield Star of Friday 16/12/1938, were as follows:
