The 1921 Northern Counties Chess Union Congress was held from Monday 28/03/1921 to Friday 01/04/1921, at YMCA Institute, Manchester.
After World War I, inter-county team matches had resumed in the Northern Counties Chess Union in 1920, and the congress including the NCCU Individual Championship resumed in 1921, the previous such congress having been that of 1913.
As well as the usual Championship and sections for weaker players, there was planned a Ladies’ Championship.
The all-play-all Championship had 8 participants. Yates and Wahltuch tied for first place on 6 out of 7. Though Yates won their individual game, the tie-break in use was a play-off, which Wahltuch won.
