2)

Yorkshire v Ireland, Correspondence Match

A correspondence match between Yorkshire and Ireland, over 80 boards, one game per board, was completed in 1909.  At close of play six games remained unfinished, these being adjudicated by J. H. Blackburne.  Yorkshire won 31 games, drew 23 and lost 26.  The final score was thus

Yorkshire 42½-37½ Ireland

Collating and typing out details of all 80 games would be tedious, but results of the six Sheffield players taking part, as reported in the Sheffield Daily Telegraph, were as follows:

Yorkshire (Sheffield)

Ireland

A E Harrison

½‑½

W J Berryman

H D Rockett

1-0

J McGuire

A B Shaw

½‑½

W N Foster

L Eppenheim

½‑½

Dr. Hamilton

T E Burkinshaw

1-0

S R Magill

G W Moses

½‑½

S Robinson

W J Berryman was resident in England, but still played correspondence chess for Ireland.  By some time in 1909 he had moved to Barnsley, though whether he started this match from Barnsley is unclear.
