Simultaneous Display by Joseph Henry Blackburne Thursday, 22/01/1903 Barnsley Mechanics’ Institute The Sheffield Daily Telegraph of 23/01/1903 carried the following: THE ENGLISH CHAMPION AT BARNSLEY Last night Mr. J. H. Blackburne, the English champion, visited the Barnsley Mechanics’ Institute, and gave an exhibition of simultaneous play against upwards of twenty members of the Institute chess club.  Mr. Blackburne had a good reception from a large number of members, and though the games ended as they usually do when the champion is engaged in these contests, some of the opponents held out patiently and pluckily till the last.
