The Whitby Gazette of Friday 26th January, 1894, reported on this match as follows:
CHESS DERWENT v. WHITBY
W. Bird and R. Bennison were presumably the players of those names who normally played for Grosmont in matches against Whitby, but were perhaps also members of Whitby Chess Club.
Identities of players:
James Sadler of Malton and Robert Sadler of Whitby were brothers. (The “S.” in “R. S. Sadler” is spurious.)
The match was also reported in the York Herald of Saturday 27/01/1894.
