1893: Scarborough v Whitby

It appears Whitby and Scarborough tended to play two matches each season around this period.

This was probably the first match of the 1892-93 season. When reporting on it, the Leeds Mercury Weekly Supplement of 25/02/1893 didn’t make it clear where the match was played. The title “Scarborough v. Whitby” probably implies the match was played at Scarborough, while the listing of the Whitby team on the left probably stems from that team being the winning one. The day of the week also tends to suggest the venue was in Scarborough.

This match was played on Wednesday 22/02/1893, over 8 boards, 2 games being played at each board. The Mercury reported as follows:

SCARBOROUGH v. WHITBY.-The match between the clubs of these Yorkshire fashionable watering places was played on Wednesday last, the Whitby players scoring well on the top boards. This success at the head more than counterbalanced the loss lower down, and the final result was a win for Whitby by 9 to 7 wins. Mr. Wallis was too impetuous, and lost unnecessarily. Mr. Martin won one game from Mr. Peguero in capital style. Score:-

“J. W. Nichols” is clearly means John W. Nicholson, who frequently played for Whitby Chess Club in those days. Similarly, “T. W. Hipton” clearly refers to Thomas Wilfred Hepton.
