For the season 1890-91, Halifax and Hull re-appeared in the list of entrants, making five teams in all.  Whilst 1888-89 was the first season Hull entered the Edwin Woodhouse Challenge Cup competition, 1890-91 was the first season they played in it!  Technically, “Hull” was Hull Church Institute, rather than Hull Chess Club as such, just as “Sheffield” was more properly the Sheffield & District Chess Association.

The fixture list for the season 1890-91 was as follows (first-named in each pairing being the home team):

* These two matches were conceded by the away teams, without play.

(Click on underlined pairing for match details.)

After the first four rounds, Leeds were sure of winning the competition irrespective of the results in the final round.  This unimportance of the final round, coupled with the fact that the final round would involve the two weakest teams travelling long distances to away matches in which they would most likely be soundly beaten, resulted in both Hull and Halifax electing to concede their final-round matches in preference to playing them.

Final results are summarised in the following table.
