It was hoped that for the first year of the Edwin Woodhouse Challenge Cup competition, established at the West Yorkshire Chess Association’s 1884 annual meeting, would kick off with five participating clubs, namely Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield, Huddersfield, and Dewsbury.

As it got nearer the start of the competition, Dewsbury decided they could not enter.  That left four teams.

The rules provided that the club from the smaller town had the right to fix the number of boards, not necessarily an even number, from a minimum of eight to a maximum of twenty boards.  Time permitting, two games were played on each board, thus selecting an odd number of boards did not involve an inherent overall colour disparity between the two teams.

The first ever Woodhouse Cup match was won by Bradford with a 20½-15½ win over Leeds, played over 20 boards.

In the meantime, Huddersfield was having doubts as to whether they could go through with the enterprise, and the club withdrew from the competition.  That left three teams.  There were thus only three matches to be played to decide the winners of the cup:

Wakefield v Bradford

Bradford ensured victory by beating Wakefield 9-4.  The match between Leeds and Wakefield thus became irrelevant.  (Was if played?)
