|
Played at the Masonic Hall, Kelsall Street, Leeds, in the afternoon of Saturday, 18/11/1882, over 10 boards, 2 games per board, time permitting
Derby’s Midland Railway Institute played matches against a variety of quite widely dispersed strong clubs around the Midlands and North.
At close of play, at 10 p.m., the games on boards 2 and 10 remained unfinished. The game on board 10 was adjudicated there and then as a a win to the MRI player. The Derby captain initially wished to send the other position for adjudication by an expert, but during the following week the MRI captain sent word that he was conceding the game to Leeds.
The results as given by the Leeds Mercury Weekly Supplement of 25/11/1882 were as follows:
The MRI board 5 player, J S West, was the former Leeds player James Samuel West.
The results were also given by the Chess Player’s Chronicle, 1882, p.555, but there the club secretaries (Hussey & Bland) were placed on board 3 rather than board 10, pushing other players down a board, and also numerous errors were introduced into the Yorkshire players’ names, also its note regarding the unfinished Hussey-Bland game, on page 568, suggests the game was adjudicated rather than concede.
The full names of the Leeds players were as follows:
