The Manchester Athenaeum Chess Club (not to be confused with the Manchester Chess Club) had in 1878 played against Bradford (see 1878 Bradford v Manchester Athenaeum). On that occasion Bradford had scored approximately 42%. In this match Leeds managed only 35%. (See also 1879: Manchester Athenaeum v Leeds for return match.)
