On 20th January
1877 a 9-board friendly match was played between Leeds and Bradford at
Wharton’s Hotel, Leeds.
As far as time
permitted, three games were to be contested at each board. Colours, and
the order in which games occurred on each board, were not reported and are
not implied in the following table of results below:
The Leeds
Mercury of Monday 22/01/1877 introduced its report on the match with the
following:
CHESS. – LEEDS
v. BRADFORD. – The Leeds Chess
Club, which is making a most praiseworthy effort to popularise the royal
game, and to restore to the town some of the prestige which it
formerly enjoyed in conjunction with other towns visited by the West
Yorkshire Chess Association, played a friendly game with the Bradford Club
on Saturday, at Wharton’s Hotel, Leeds, in the presence of a goodly
number of visitors. The Bradford players brought with them a well-won
reputation. If they failed to sustain iton this occasion, we must do
them the justice to say they fought manfully for their good name, and that
the pluck with which they strove to ward off their defeat received, as it
deserved, the cordial recognition of their opponents. The result
shows that the Leeds Club has amongst its members some really strong
amateur players, and that most who are fond of the game may be sure of
meeting in its rooms with gentlemen worthy of their skill. The match
is to be followed by a tournament, and some good play is expected.
The following is the score of Saturday’s match: -
