1872: Bradford v Halifax 2 |

Played at the Masonic Hall, Bradford, on Saturday, 13/04/1872, over 10 boards, 3 games per board (time permitting).
From 1861 to 1867, Halifax chess-players were somewhat conspicuous by their absence from events such as the annual meetings of the West Yorkshire Chess Association, apart from the odd sighting of Thomas Wilson Field. However, around 1867-68, Maximilian Edward Werner, formerly of Bradford, moved to Halifax. Shortly after that, Halifax Chess Club apparently experienced a “revival” which one suspects was attributable primarily to Werner, and doubtless was supported by Thomas Field. The most obvious manifestation of this revival was a series of matches between Werner’s new club, Halifax, and his old one, Bradford.
This particular match was described as a “return” match, perhaps a “return” to that of 08/03/1872, though that too was played at Bradford.
The target of 3 games per board was achieved on 6 of the 10 boards; only 2 games were played on 3 boards, and on board 3 only one game was managed.
Former Bradford player Maximillian Edward Werner, who is recorded as having had a hand in the “revival” of Halifax Chess Club, was playing on board two for Halifax, and, perhaps a little pretentiously, gave his opponent odds of pawn and move.
Play commenced at 4 p.m. and ended a little after 9 p.m. That implies each player who played 3 games used on average 50 minutes or less per game.
Results, as reported in the Halifax Guardian of 20/04/1872, and later in the Westminster Papers of 01/05/1872 (vol.5, page2), included no drawn games, and were as follows:

The lack of initials leaves some doubt as to some players’ identities, and some players are not familiar. Apparent identities are as follows:
