The Chess Player’s Chronicle, 3rd Series, Vol. II, page 146 described how John Watkinson and Walter Parratt of Huddersfield had contested a match in which the former gave odds of a pawn and two moves, the results being Watkinson 7 wins, Parratt 3 wins, with 4 draws.  At the start of the match, Watkinson was 26 years of age, while Parratt was 18.

 

Earlier the pair had conducted a similar match with Watkinson giving the massive odds of Queen’s Rook and Queen’s Knight, with Walter Parratt winning “very decisively”.
